Lazy Bird: video - Philipp Haffner / music - hunger
hunger - founded in 1996 near the Lake of Constance, in Hamburg since 1998 - consists of Christoph Rothmeier (drums, voice, trumpet) and Jörg Hochapfel (keyboards, voice).
Former members are Karsten Hochapfel (cello, guitar, voice, flutes, trumpet) and Barbara Fuchsberger (clarinet, voice, stylophone, melodica).
In its beginning, the musical activity of hunger might be characterized as „total improvisation“, trying to bring together music, speech and noise as well as the most diverse musical genres and styles on equal terms. Additionally, the use of numerous and unfamiliar instruments results in intentional dilettantism.
Since 2001, the instrumentation has been limited to two voices, drums and keyboards, and the improvisational elements have been reduced in favour of an increasingly conceptual and deconstructive work with bits and pieces of popular music, e.g. rock, house or punk.
An important part of this work is the conscious inclusion of cognitive and motor inabilities, on the one hand achieved through the imitation of electronically programmed music by musicians playing in real time who are not capable of the required exactness, on the other hand through the superposition of musical layers independent from each other and yet connected by interactive signals, the resulting cognitive over-complexity making accurate coordination impossible.
Other means of deconstruction consist in reducing popular song form to its pure structure and obscuring musical progressions by extreme repetitiveness.
