The Hamburg-based initiative «target: autonopop» has evolved since 2003, beginning as an exhibition instigated by Michel Chevalier at Westwerk, and since then becoming a loose collective of art workers in Europe and North America.

The guiding thread of «target: autonopop» is a rejection of the art market as an arbiter of taste and production. «target: autonopop» has again and again examined the articulation between the market/gallery and institutional spheres, their cooptational and coercive instances, and their aversion to any critique which has real consequences.

On the curatorial and production level, «target: autonopop» has avoided the commodity-form of art, opting instead for unauthorized guided tours of institutional exhibitons, "open mic." discussions, iconological taxonomies, workshops, and an experimental outlet for artistis' multiples against the norms of the the free-market: "unlimited liability".

For WSW 3 «target: autonopop» plans distinct contributions in close collaboration with very different kinds of initiatives in Montréal, Lüneburg, and Rotterdam. Each of the three interventions lays stress on a seperate stategic priorities: rupture, criticism, and revolution.

April 14-16, 2009: Montréal was very recently the location for an "applied art criticism" workshop in cooperation with artist-run spaces Articule and Système Minuit. It involved a detailed group reading of a radical statement from 1975: Michael Corris' essay "Yet another palace revolt in the banana republic?" published in the legendary but long-out-of-print magazine of New York Art & Language, THE FOX.

October 29 + 30, 2009: Rotterdam's Piet Zwart Institute has commissioned «target: autonopop» to provide a scenario and logic for an imminent collapse and eradication of the art-market in toto. In accordance, a talk and a public space intervention will attempt to bring the desired theme into maximum contrast with existing institutions in Rotterdam—with an eye on spurring debate and action.

At Luneburg, two members of «target: autonopop» are invited to provide input (editorial and presentational) to a series of events dedicated to the renewal of art criticism. The opening event has already taken place unter the title „Art & critique“. It included a general overview to the status of art criticism nowadays and a presentation of alternative forms of continuing the critical project in and for the arts. The next lectures (invited by the Institute of Art and its Mediation, Prof. Dr. Pierangelo Maset) will present different artistic strategies »t:a« has worked out: sound installation, formats for discussion and lectures, video works.
